## What is a local business directory?

A local business directory is an online list of businesses in one area, searchable by category, city, and location. Customers use it to find a plumber, a restaurant, or a lawyer nearby, and businesses use it to show up where those customers are looking.

Most local business directories show the same core business information: name, address, phone number, hours, services, photos, and reviews. The difference between them is how they decide the order of the list, and who pays for the top of it.

## How do local business directories rank businesses?

Most directories rank businesses on a mix of relevance, distance, reviews, and paid placement. A search for roofers near you usually returns sponsored listings first, then businesses sorted by how well they match the search, how close they are, and how many good reviews they have.

That system favors businesses with years of reviews and an advertising budget. A new business with better work and fewer reviews lands lower, even when it is the right choice.

- Paid placement: sponsored or featured listings at the top of a category.
- Relevance: how closely the business category and services match the search.
- Distance: how close the business location is to the searcher.
- Reviews: the count, the average rating, and how recent they are.

## Are online business directories trustworthy?

Online local business directories are trustworthy for basic facts and less so for rankings. An address and phone number are easy to check; the order of a list often reflects who paid or who has been around longest.

Look for the labels. A listing marked sponsored, featured, or ad was bought. The FTC's Endorsement Guides say a ranking where payment decides the order is deceptive, and our Rigged series documents how the biggest directories disclose it.

## What should a local business listing include?

A complete local business listing includes the same name, address, and phone number everywhere, plus hours, services, a website link, and real photos. Consistent details help customers reach you and help search engines trust the listing.

- Business name, address, and phone number, matched across every directory.
- Hours of operation and service area.
- The services you offer, in the words customers search for.
- Your license or registration number where it applies.
- Photos of your own work, and a link to your website.

## How do new businesses get found in local search?

New businesses get found by claiming free listings first and then giving customers a reason to choose them. Claim your Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, and Bing Places listings, keep the details consistent, and ask happy customers for reviews.

Then make your own site do the work: publish pricing, terms, and your license number, and document real projects. Those same steps earn points on the IOU Score, which is how a newer business earns a place in this directory without paying for it.

## Are free local business directories worth it?

Free local business directories are worth it for almost every new business, because they cost nothing and put accurate details where customers search. The value comes from online visibility and consistency, not from the directory alone.

Create your profile on each one, add real photos, and use the features they offer to post or share updates, answer customer reviews, and list your services. Consistent business listings support local SEO, help you connect with your community, and attract new customers who compare options in their city before they call.

Paid upgrades are a separate decision. Before you pay for a featured spot, ask what it costs per month, what it buys, and whether it is labeled as an ad. For most new businesses, the free profile plus a strong website does more for business growth than a sponsored slot.

## How do consumers compare local businesses online?

Consumers compare local businesses by reading listings side by side, checking reviews, and visiting the websites of the few that stand out. Online local business directories are usually the first step, and a business website is often the last.

What earns credibility at that point is proof: a license number, clear prices, real photos, and a way to reach a person. Those are the details that give a newer business an edge over bigger competitors, and the same insights the IOU Score is built on. Directories that provide customers with that evidence, not just a star average, help them make better choices.

## How is the L3ad.io directory organized?

The directory is organized by metro and by industry. Each of Florida's 10 largest metros has its own page, and each weekly Rising issue names up to five new businesses per metro for one industry.

Every listing links to its IOU evidence: the license or registration record, the pages each check was scored from, and the date it was verified. If fewer than five businesses in a metro earn 15 points, the list names fewer. We never pad it.

## Questions

**What is L3ad.io?**

A free local business directory built for new and up-and-coming businesses. We rank businesses by the IOU Method (Integrity, Openness, and the Underdog) and its 25-check IOU Score, using public records and each business's own website. No business can pay to be listed or ranked.

**Which industries does the directory cover?**

We start with eight licensed trades because Florida's license records are the strongest public evidence available. The plan is fifty industries, from licensed professions to shops, studios, and startups.

**How is this different from Yelp or other directories?**

Most online business directories earn money from the businesses they list, through ads, sponsored listings, or leads. L3ad.io sells nothing to businesses, so the order of every list comes only from the IOU Method.

**How do I list my business?**

You cannot apply and you cannot pay. If your business qualifies on the public record, we find it and score it on the IOU Score. Keep your license or registration active and your website clear about who you are and what you offer.

**Is the directory free?**

Yes. Free to read, free to be listed, and free to earn the Rising badge.
