About L3ad.io
Somewhere in your city is a new business doing better work than the names at the top of every list. It cannot afford a sponsored spot, and it has not had twenty years to collect reviews. L3ad.io exists for that business.

At a glance
Business listing sites were meant to help people find good businesses. Many now sell the top of the page. Sponsorship tiers put paying firms ahead of everyone else, featured spots go to the highest bidder, and badges come with an invoice.
The businesses that lose are the new ones. Smart founders with solid plans and real skill, who deserve recognition as much as anyone, stay buried under the companies that can outspend them or simply got there first.
We report on how that system works in Rigged. We built L3ad.io to route around it.
Who it is for
How we rank
Integrity asks whether a business is legitimate on the public record and can show its work: an active license or registration, a clean record, accountable people, and documented projects.
Openness asks whether it shows customers what they need and does something its competitors are not: pricing, terms, credentials, a clear offer, reachable people, and its own way of working.
Underdog asks whether it is rising on its own merit: newer, growing, actively maintained, and recognized for its work rather than its budget.
The IOU Score turns the three pillars into 25 pass/fail checks, each published with its evidence. None rewards size or ad spend. That is the whole point.

What we publish
One industry a week: the Top 5 Rising businesses in each of Florida's ten largest metros, all first licensed or registered within five years and all scoring at least 15 of 24 on the IOU Score.
See RisingA sourced exposé on the pay-to-play side of business rankings: sponsored listings, badges for sale, and awards with a price tag.
Read RiggedOur rules
We sell nothing to the businesses we list: no listings, placements, badges, reports, or leads.
We do not rank marketing, advertising, SEO, or web design businesses.
We never contact a listed business to sell it anything.
We publish the data behind every list and fix factual errors in public.
We are funded by reader tips, never by the businesses we cover.
Small business directory
A small business directory is an online list of local businesses that customers can search by category, city, or service. Some are run by cities, chambers of commerce, and economic development offices; others are private websites that earn money from the companies they list.
A good directory gives consumers useful information in one place: what a business does, where its office or service area is, how to reach it, and some reason to trust it. A business listing on a directory can also help small business owners build online visibility, get found by search engines, and reach potential customers who have never heard of them.
Most private online business directories in the USA make money from the businesses they list. The common models are paid listings, featured or sponsored spots at the top of a category, badges, and lead sales.
Prices are usually public. LocalBizNetwork, for example, advertises its small business listing for $99 a year. Other directories offer a free basic business listing and charge for a higher position, more photos, or links to your website. None of that is hidden, but it means the order of the list often follows the money.
Rigged, our weekly exposé, documents how that works on the biggest directories, with each company's own prices and disclosure text.
L3ad.io is a small business directory with no sponsors, no paid listings, and no listing form. Nobody can pay to be included, to move up, or to be removed, and we never contact a listed business to sell it anything.
Instead of selling spots, we score them. Every business on a list is scored on the IOU Method: 25 pass/fail checks for Integrity, Openness, and the Underdog, each with a source link and the date it was verified. The directory shows the evidence, so customers and buyers can check every point themselves.

The directory lists newer businesses: companies first licensed or registered in the last five years, with a website of their own, that pass the IOU gate and earn at least 15 of 24 points.
We start with licensed trades such as roofers, HVAC contractors, plumbers, and electricians, because public license records make every check verifiable. The plan covers fifty industries, from home services and lawn care to restaurants, retail, food, legal services, insurance, education, entertainment, software, and technology companies. Marketing, advertising, SEO, and web design businesses are never ranked, because they sell visibility.
Each list covers one of Florida's ten largest metros, so a new business in Tampa is judged next to its local market, not the whole state.
Use an online directory to build a short list of local business options, then check each business on your own. A listing tells you a company exists; it does not prove the company is licensed, insured, or any good.
Free business directories are worth it when they send local customers, give buyers access to accurate details, and cost nothing to maintain. A free Google Business Profile, your city or county directory, and your local chamber of commerce listing are the usual first steps for most businesses.
Paid placement is a different decision. For a new business on a tight plan, the money often does more as a published price list, a warranty, or better photos of real work, the same things that earn points on the IOU Score and build trust with buyers over the long term.
There is no sign-up. Businesses are found through public license and registration records and scored on their own websites, so the way in is to earn the checks.
Publish your pricing and terms, show your license number, name your team, and document three recent projects with dates. Every check a business passes is one we can verify, and the full method is public for any entrepreneur, aspiring entrepreneur, or established company that wants to read it.
L3ad.io is funded by anonymous reader tips and nothing else. There is no advertising and no paid tier for the businesses we cover.
That is the only funding model that keeps a directory honest over the long term. The moment a listed business can pay, the list starts to follow the money.
